Sunil Chhetri made his move in football after seeing his parents. He started playing football from a very young age and it was not known when his game became his passion. When his football shoes broke in childhood, he used to wear his old shoes back by not demanding new shoes from his father as he knew and understood that his family's financial situation was not good at that time.
Sunil Chhetri's father was in the Army, so he did his studies from different schools in different places like Gangtok, Darjeeling, Kolkata and Delhi. Along with studies, he was also playing football. After the 12th he focused his attention on football and left his studies. Sunil Chhetri started his career playing for Delhi City Football Club in 2001. After this, he played for many different clubs, which included Mohan Bhagat. He did brilliantly by playing for every club and helped his team to improve. In 2004, Sunil Chhetri got a chance to play in India's U20 team but could not score any goals at that time.
But due to his excellent performance at club level, it was only in 2005 that he got an opportunity to play in India's senior team and got the first goal against India's most rival team Pakistan. After that, he went on to achieve succession and touch the heights. He has played for many foreign clubs in his career.
He is the third Indian player to play outside South Asia. Apart from this, he has also become the first Indian player to play in MLF. Seeing his talent, he was handed the captaincy of the Indian team in 2012 and since then Chhetri has been the captain of the Indian team.
